Community Description
Fort McMurray is an urban service area within the Regional Municipality (RM) of Wood Buffalo, Alberta. It was officially incorporated as a city on Sept. 1, 1980, but its official city designation was removed however when it amalgamated with Improvement District No. 18 on April 1, 1995 to create the Municipality of Wood Buffalo (which was later renamed to the RM of Wood Buffalo on Aug. 14, 1996).
Despite its current official designation as an urban service area, many locals, politicians and the media still refer to Fort McMurray as a city.
